Objective: To investigate chest computed tomography (CT) findings associated with severe COVID-19 pneumonia in the early recovery period. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the cases of patients diagnosed with severe COVID-19 pneumonia at a single center between January 12, 2020, and March 16, 2020. The twelve ICU patients studied had been diagnosed SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) nucleic acid positive. Patient clinical symptoms were relieved or disappeared, and basic clinical information and laboratory test results were collected. The study focused on the most recent CT imaging characteristics. Results: The average age of the 12 patients was 58.8 +/- 16.2 years. The most prevalent symptoms were fever (100%), dyspnea (100%), and cough (83.3%). All patients experienced acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), of which 9 were moderate to severe. Six patients used noninvasive ventilators, and 4 patients used mechanical ventilation. One patient was treated with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). The lymphocyte count decreased to 0.67 +/- 0.3 (x 10 /L). The average day from illness onset to the last follow-up CT was 56.1 +/- 7.7 d. The CT results showed a decrease in ground glass opacities (GGO), whereas fibrosis gradually increased. The common CT features included GGO (10/12, 83.3%), subpleural line (10/12, 83.3%), fibrous stripes (12/12, 100%), and traction bronchiectasis (10/12, 83.3%). Eight patients (66.7%) showed predominant reticulation and interlobular thickening. Four patients (33.3%) showed predominant GGO. Lung segments involved were 174/216 (80.6%). Conclusions: Fibrous stripes and GGO are common CT signs in critically ill patients with COVID-19 pneumonia in the early recovery period. From the same cross-linked scaffold, a diversity of basic, acidic, and solute-chelating moieties were obtained through functionalization, which allows for tailored uptake of basic and acidic organic dyes and metal chloride salts. Ion permeation and sorption measurements for a series of polymer networks with controlled cross-linking density and varied imidazole grafting densities illustrate the ability of this platform to isolate the effect of chemical functionality on ion transport from the effects of cross-linking density and water content.

Stimulus-responsive materials have great potential in advanced controllable oil/water separation applications. Here, a novel, cost-effective, and green approach is developed to produce a pH-responsive smart fabric with switchable wettability. The approach first involves grafting polydopamine (PDA) and cystamine dihydrochloride (cystamine) on a fabric surface to obtain thiol-functionalized fabric (Fabric-SH). Hydrophobic stearyl methacrylate (SMA) and pH-responsive undecylenic acid are then decorated on the Fabric-SH surface through efficient and green photoinduced thiol-ene click coupling chemistry. The obtained fabric exhibits rapidly switchable wettability between superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity depending on the contacting liquid pH value and can be applied in controllable separation of various mixtures of water and oil with high efficiency up to 99%. More importantly, the as prepared fabric is able to realize the separation of oil/water/oil ternary mixtures and can self-clean and repel oil fouling during the separation process. Its superhydrophobicity is robust, showing no significant change after a 500 cycle peeling test. This novel and cost-effective smart cotton fabric exhibits significant potential in satisfying different separation purposes under complicated conditions.

Modified silica-based isoprene rubber (IR) composite has been designed and prepared by using a multi-functional silane, 2-aminoethyl 2-(3-triethoxysilylpropyl)aminoethyl disulfide (ATD), as coupling agent. Such modification significantly improved the dispersity of silica in the corresponding composites, as verified by SEM observation. And the hardness, tensile strength, stress at definite elongation, tear strength and temperature rise as well as the value of dynamic loss coefficient ranging from 0 degrees C to 80 degrees C of silica/IR vulcanized composites, are significantly improved, especially with low ATD dosage (2-4 phr). Polymeric prodrug-based delivery systems have been extensively studied to find a better solution for the limitations of a single drug and to improve the therapeutic and pharmacodynamics properties of chemotherapeutic agents, which can lead to efficient therapy. In this study, redox-responsive disulfide bond-containing amphiphilic heparin-chlorambucil conjugated polymeric prodrugs were designed and synthesized to enhance anti-tumor activities of chlorambucil. The conjugated prodrug could be self-assembled to form spherical vesicles with 61.33% chlorambucil grafting efficiency. The cell viability test results showed that the prodrug was biocompatible with normal cells (HaCaT) and that it selectively killed tumor cells (HeLa cells). The uptake of prodrugs by HeLa cells increased with time. Therefore, the designed prodrugs can be a better alternative as delivery vehicles for the chlorambucil controlled release in cancer cells.

Background Turf toe injuries, though most common in athletes, can also occur in non-athletes. No study exists in the current literature investigating operative outcomes in non-athlete patients with chronic turf toe injury. In this study, we present our outcomes on operatively treated turf toe injuries in non-athletes in the only cohort yet studied. Methods Using ICD-10 codes, we assembled a cohort of 12 patients who underwent operative repair of chronic turf toe injury from January 2012 through January 2018 at the investigating institution. These 12 patients were evaluated to determine demographic information, method of injury, length of time from injury to surgery, clinical and radiologic characteristics of the injury, and operative outcomes including mean preoperative and postoperative VAS (Visual Analog Scale) scores, preoperative and postoperative FFI (Foot Function Index) scores, and postoperative complications. Results On initial clinical presentation, all 12 patients had local tenderness with associated painful range of motion. Four patients had restricted range of motion, all patients had a positive Lachman test, two had local edema, and eight had hallux valgus deformity. Mean VAS improved from 4.6 (range 2-9) to 1 (range 0-4). Mean FFI improved from 102.5 (range 56-177) to 61.75 (range 23-144). All patients had a negative Lachman test at final follow-up. No patients developed major complications or required revision surgery. Conclusions Our study is the first to investigate operative outcomes following chronic turf toe injury in non-athlete patients. Based on our study, surgeons and patients can expect significant improvement in overall pain and function following surgery.

The simultaneous reduction and functionalization of graphene oxide (GO) was achieved through a chemical grafting reaction with cystamine dihydrochloride (CDHC), a novel functional agent with dynamic disulfide bond. CDHC-reduced GO (CGO) can be uniformly and stably dispersed in the aqueous phase. Furthermore, CGO reinforced styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) composites with highly filled silica content were prepared by a latex mixing and coagulation process. TEM confirmed both CGO and silica can be uniformly dispersed in the rubber matrix. The dynamic disulfide bonds of the grafted CDHC in the CGO can participate in the subsequent vulcanization of SBR rubber through disulfide exchange reactions, thereby forming a tight interaction between GO and rubber. Compared with normally reduced GO system, the mechanical and thermal properties of CGOcontaining rubber nanocomposites were significantly improved. The results show that CGO is effective to reinforce rubber composites, which has the potential to be used for tire rubber materials.

A new method of supramolecular emulsion interfacial polymerization is developed, which can be used to fabricate supramolecular polymeric nanospheres. We designed a water-soluble monomer containing two maleimide end groups, acting as both building block and surfactant, and an oil-soluble supramonomer bearing two thiol groups connected by quadruple hydrogen bonds. With the assist of ultrasonication, hollow nanospheres can be controllably prepared by thiol-maleimide reaction of two monomers at the emulsion interface, which exhibit good stability and dynamic property. In addition, the encapsulated guest molecules could be controllably released from the supramolecular polymeric nanospheres, owing to their stimuli-responsiveness. It is anticipated that this approach will enrich the methodology of supramolecular polymerization and can be applied to constructing supramolecular materials with controllable structures and functions.
