Stimulus-responsive materials have great potential in advanced controllable oil/water separation applications. Here, a novel, cost-effective, and green approach is developed to produce a pH-responsive smart fabric with switchable wettability. The approach first involves grafting polydopamine (PDA) and cystamine dihydrochloride (cystamine) on a fabric surface to obtain thiol-functionalized fabric (Fabric-SH). Hydrophobic stearyl methacrylate (SMA) and pH-responsive undecylenic acid are then decorated on the Fabric-SH surface through efficient and green photoinduced thiol-ene click coupling chemistry. The obtained fabric exhibits rapidly switchable wettability between superhydrophobicity and superhydrophilicity depending on the contacting liquid pH value and can be applied in controllable separation of various mixtures of water and oil with high efficiency up to 99%. More importantly, the as prepared fabric is able to realize the separation of oil/water/oil ternary mixtures and can self-clean and repel oil fouling during the separation process. Its superhydrophobicity is robust, showing no significant change after a 500 cycle peeling test. This novel and cost-effective smart cotton fabric exhibits significant potential in satisfying different separation purposes under complicated conditions.

Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) show promising potential for tumor imaging owing to their unique superior fluorescent properties. However, the small particle size limits their practical application. Here, pH/reduction dual-responsive comet-shaped PEGylated CQD-DOX conjugate prodrug, DOX-Hy-CQD-SS-PEG with DOX content of 28.5%, was designed with the hydrophobic acid-labile DOX conjugated CQDs as comet nucleus and the few hydrophilic bioreducible detachable PEG brushes as comet tails. The comet-shaped DOX-Hy-CQD-SS-PEG prodrug could self-assemble into unique micelles with mean diameter of 127 nm. The DOX-Hy-CQD-SS-PEG micelles possessed excellent pH/reduction dual-responsive drug release with low drug leakage of 9% in 150 h. Furthermore, the fluorescent CQDs was recovered after DOX release and de-PEGylation, demonstrating their potential application for real-time response of therapy.

A multifunctional drug delivery system (MDDS) based on near-infrared (NIR) imaging was developed in various conformations for the accurate diagnosis and therapy of cancer. However, it remains challenging to develop an ideal structure for an MDDS with both exact and variable functionality. Herein, we report a fluorescence color-changeable branched-form heptamethine cyanine dye (PEG-4-CyP) that has both a simple structure and various functionality. The PEG-4-CyP was not only able to construct the nanoparticle (NP) structure by encapsulating DOX (PEG-4-CyP/DOX), but also showed change in the NIR fluorescence color by reacting with glutathione (GSH). The PEG-4-CyP/DOX was broken down in the redox microenvironment inside cancers because of the reduction reaction of PEG-4-CyP to GSH. As a result, the NP disruption, DOX release, and reactivity of PEG-4-CyP to GSH were visualized by NIR fluorescence color-change. Moreover, PEG-4-CyP/DOX showed an excellent chemophototherapeutic effect in cancer cells. This NIR fluorescence color-change strategy demonstrates the applicability of PEG-4-CyP as a novel MDDS able to provide a variety of information with a simple NP structure. Compared with liquid electrolytes, the solid polymer electrolyte (SPE), which possesses improved thermal and mechanical stability, is believed the broadest potential application for satisfying the safety needs of advanced electro-chemical devices. However, some breakable SPEs could lead to catastrophic failure of batteries that triggered by a short circuit. In the present contribution, a new class of SPE containing disulfide bonds and urea groups is reported. The hydrogen bonding between the urea groups and disulfide metathesis reaction endows the SPE with a high level of self-healing without external stimuli at room temperature as well as ultrafast self-healing at elevated temperatures. The completely healed SPE with extreme damage shows a high self-healing efficiency and no changes in the ionic conductivity and cycling performance of the solid-state lithium-metal/LiFePO4 cell compared to the pristine one.

Sequence specific molecules with high folding ability (i.e., foldamers) can be used to precisely control the distribution and projection of side chains in space and have recently been introduced as tailored systems for delivering nucleic acids into cells. Designed oligourea sequences with an amphipathic distribution of Arg- and His-type residues were shown to form tight complexes with plasmid DNA, and to effectively promote the release of DNA from the endosomes. Herein, we report the synthesis of new cell-penetrating foldamer sequences in which the foldamer segment is conjugated via a reducible disulfide bond to a ligand that binds cell-surface expressed nucleoproteins with the idea that this system could facilitate both assemblies with nucleic acids and cell entry. This new system was evaluated for delivery of DNA in several cell lines and was found to compare favorably with all comparators tested (DOTAP and b-PEI as well as a number of known cell penetrating peptides) in various cell lines and particularly in culture medium containing up to 50% of serum. These results suggest that this dual molecular platform which is long lasting and noncytotoxic could be of practical use for in vivo applications.

RNA interference (RNAi) is an emerging therapeutic modality for tumors. However, lack of a safe and efficient small interfering RNA (siRNA) delivery system limits its clinical application. Here, we report a bioreducible and less-cationic siRNA delivery carrier by conjugating Zn(II)-dipicolylamine complexes (Zn-DPA) onto hyaluronic acid (HA) via a redox-sensitive disulfide (-SS-) linker. Such polymer conjugates can formulate stable siRNA nanomedicines via coordination between zinc ions of DPA and the anionic phosphate of siRNA. After the conjugates are taken up by cells, intracellular reduction stimulus subsequently triggers the release of siRNAs and elucidates the desired RNAi effect. Our studies showed the formulated siRNA nanomedicines can be efficiently delivered into tumor cells/tissues and mediates less cytotoxicities both in vitro and in vivo. More importantly, when applied in a xenograft glioblastoma tumor model, this siRNA nanomedicine demonstrated significantly enhanced antitumor ability comparing to naked siRNA. This work demonstrates that such bioreducible Zn-DPA-functionalized HA conjugates without using cationic material as a siRNA carrier represents a promising direction for RNAi-based cancer therapy.

Crosslinked polymer nanomaterials have attracted great attention due to their stability and highly controllable drug delivery; herein, a series of well-defined amphiphilic PDPA-b-P(NMS-co-OEG) diblock terpolymers (P1-P3) were designed and prepared via RAFT polymerization and were self-assembled into non-cross-linked (NCL) nanomicelles, which were further prepared into shell-cross-linked (SCL) micelles via cystamine-based in situ shell cross-linking. Using P3 as an optimized polymer, SCL-P3 micelles were prepared, which demonstrated remarkable pH/redox-dual responsive behaviour. For drug delivery, camptothecin (CPT)-loaded SCL-P3 micelles were prepared and showed much higher CPT-loading capability than their NCL-P3 counterparts. Notably, the SCL-P3 micelles showed good synergistic pH/redox-dual responsive CPT release properties, making them potential smart nanocarriers for drug delivery.

Soft poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) (PNVCL) based nanogels were prepared and surface-decorated with gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). The applicability of the hybrid nanogels (PNVCL-AuNPs) as carriers for low molar mass substances was of special interest. AuNPs protected with a mixture of 11-azidoundecanothiol and 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid were bound to propargyl functionalized PNVCL based nanogels. Acidic groups on the surfaces of AuNPs and PNVCL based nanogels stabilize the particle dispersions against precipitation above the phase transition temperature of PNVCL. Both the neat PNVCL nanogels and the PVCL-AuNPs shrink upon heating the dispersions. Even though the AuNPs are mainly located in the soft surface layer of the nanogels, the PNVCL-AuNPs respond to visible light as well as to radio-frequency (RF) irradiation by shrinking due to the AuNPs acting as nanoheaters. Interactions of linear PNVCL, PNVCL nanogels and PNVCL-AuNPs with two fluorescent probes were studied as function of increasing temperature. Once bound to the polymer the fluorescent probe may or may not be released from it, depending on its polarity and water solubility. Presence of AuNPs changed the release behavior of the water soluble charged fluorescent probe from the nanogels.

The objective of this study was to synthesize and characterize cystamine dihydrochloride (CYS) crosslinked carboxymethyl cellulose/quaternized chitosan (CMC/HACC) composite hydrogel film. Firstly, the glycidyl-based quaternary ammonium chitosan derivative (HACC) was synthesized using nucleophilic substitution reaction. Then HACC was analyzed by FTIR, (HNMR)-H-1 spectra and the composite films at different blending ratio of CMC and HACC were studied by rheology measurement, mechanical and swelling tests. When the composite films were prepared under optimized conditions (CMC: HACC = 7:1), they showed excellent mechanical properties (with improved 93.3% tensile strength and 2.3% elongation at break) and swellability (equilibrium swelling ratio increased 270%) compared to pure CMC film. 5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) was used as drug model which has broad-spectrum anticancer properties. The 5-FU/CMC/HACC composite films showed redox and pH responsive of drug release properties along with well biocompatibility. The in vitro cytotoxicity and cell apoptosis studies showed the drug loaded composite films with obvious toxicity against HepG2 cells especially in the presence of GSH. In addition, CMC/HACC composite films showed good antibacterial against S. aureus and E. coli, while pure CMC film had no antimicrobial activities. It can be concluded that CMC/HACC composite films can be potentially used as targeted drug delivery system. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
