Nanoparticles for drug delivery are the subject of extensive research. Importantly, they can transform in size during synthesis or actual use, thereby changing their cytotoxic properties. The aim of the present work was to study the tendency of [Zn-67] porphyrin-fullerene nanoparticles (BFNP) to aggregate over time and to compare the properties of hydroxyapatite (HAP) nanoparticles obtained through 3 different techniques. We found that aggregation of BFNP nanoparticles does not affect their function but attenuates their cytotoxicity against leukemia cells. We were also able to obtain HAP nanoparticles with programmable properties (such as size, shape or the capacity to adsorb metal ions, ligands and chemical complexes) through enzymatic synthesis by varying its conditions. The synthesized HAP nanoparticles contain short-lived isotopes of zinc and copper (in the form of ions and complexes with pyrimidine or thiazine derivatives). These tumoricidal components (a radionuclide and a ligand or a complex) determine the diagnostic and therapeutic potential of the obtained radiopharmaceutical agents.

Characterization of biogenically synthesized silver nanoparticles for therapeutic applications and enzyme nanocomplex generation

The present study describes green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and inulin hydrolyzing enzyme nanocomplexes (ENC) usingAzadirachta indica(Ai) andPunica granatum(Pg) leaf extracts. Surface topology and physico-chemical characteristics of AgNPs were studied using surface plasmon resonance (SPR), FTIR, SEM, AFM and EDX analyses. Particle size analysis using dynamic light scattering and AFM studies revealed thatAi-AgNPs (76.4 nm) were spherical in shape having central bigger nano-regime with smaller surroundings whilePg-AgNPs (72.1 nm) and ENCs (Inulinase-Pg-AgNPs similar to 145 nm) were spherical particles having smooth surfaces.Pg-AgNPs exhibited significant photocatalysis of a thiazine dye, methylene blue. BothAi-andPg-AgNPs showed selective antibacterial action by inhibiting pathogenicBacillus cereus, while the probioticLactobacillusstrains remained unaffected.Ai-AgNPs showed potential anti-biofilm effect (30% viability) onB. cereusbiofilms.Pg-AgNPs showed anti-cancer effect against human colon cancer cell lines (Caco-2) resulting in 40% cell death in 48 h. The study elaborates characteristics of green synthesized nanoparticles and their potential applications as anti-cancer, antibacterial and antioxidant nano drugs that could be used in food and nutraceutical industries. The structure of the Schiff – base acts as dibasic tetradentate N2O2 for the complexation reaction with Cr(III), Fe(III), Co(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), Ce(III), Cd(II), and UO2(II) ions via phenolates oxygen and nitrogen of azomethine groups. Based on spectral data and magnetic moments, an octahedral geometry may be proposed for the synthesized complexes except cerium(III) complex which has pentagonal bipyramidal arrangement. The low values of the molar conductance indicate non-electrolyte nature of complexes, while 1:1 electrolyte for cerium(III)- and chromium(III)-complexes. The Coats-Redfern equation was used to calculate the kinetic and thermodynamic parameters for the different thermal decomposition steps of some complexes. All the synthesized compounds were tested for in vitro antibacterial activity against some Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, yeast and fungus. Ultrasmall Plasmonic Nanoparticles Decorated Hierarchical Mesoporous TiO2 as an Efficient Photocatalyst for Photocatalytic Degradation of Textile Dyes

Hierarchical mesoporous TiO2 was synthesized via a solvothermal technique. The sonochemical method was adopted to decorate plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) (Ag, Au) on the pores of mesoporous TiO2. The crystallinity, structure, and morphology were determined to understand the physicochemical nature of the nanocomposites. The catalytic efficiency of the plasmonic nanocatalysts was tested for the azo dyes (congo red, methyl orange, acid orange 10, and remazol red) under solar and visible light irradiations. The generation of hydroxyl radicals was also studied using terephthalic acid as a probe molecule. An attempt was made to understand the influence of size, work function and Fermi level of the metal NPs toward the efficiency of the photocatalyst. The efficiency of the nanocomposites was found to be in the order of P25 < mesoporous TiO2 < mesoporous Ag-TiO2 < mesoporous Au-TiO2 nanospheres under both direct solar light and visible light irradiation. The results indicated that the adsorption of dye, anatase phase, and surface plasmon resonance of NPs favored the effective degradation of dyes in aqueous solution. Further, the efficiency of the catalyst was also tested for xanthene (rose bengal), rhodamine (rhodamine B, rhodamine 6G), and thiazine (methylene blue) dyes. Both TiO2 and NPs (Ag & Au) possess a huge potential as an eco-friendly photocatalyst for wastewater treatment.
